Map of Integrated Aqua-Agriculture Practices in East Africa
Integrated Agriculture-Aquaculture (IAA), which involves producing fish alongside other goods (animals and crops) in the same system, is carried out at different scales in three African countries: Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
This food production method could improve food and nutrition security, particularly for smallholder farmers. This is because IAA systems are resource-efficient and promote diversity in production, resulting in more sustainable food production.
A survey was conducted to identify the locations and types of IAA practices in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. The primary goal was to document IAA practices, levels of integration, production, opportunities, and challenges encountered by farmers in the three countries.
Integrated aqua-agriculture is a dynamic and evolving practice that offers diverse benefits across the East African region. As farmers in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania continue to refine their approaches, the collective experiences and lessons learned from these countries will contribute to the ongoing development and optimisation of integrated aqua-agriculture practices across Africa.
This map documents the existence of IAA sites in East Africa.[FR1] The analysis and further information on mapping can be found in Deliverable 2.2.

155 IAA farms were identified and mapped in Kenya. 98 of these farms were located in the Kisumu region, and 18 in the Nyakach sub-county.
19 farms practising integrated aqua-agriculture were identified and mapped in Tanzania. 8 of these farms were located in the Morogoro region. The spread of the farms identified other than those in Morogoro was reached physically, so only a sample of fish farmers was reached.
In Uganda, 45 integrated aqua-agriculture farms were identified and mapped. Of these, 14 were in the Western and Central regions, and 11 were in the West-Nile region. No other region had more than 10 IAA farms identified.
