PrAEctiCe joins in recognising World Food Safety Day 2024

This year’s World Food Safety Day, held on 7 June, focuses on the significance of preparedness for food safety incidents, regardless of their severity. Food safety incidents refer to situations posing potential or verified health risks linked to food consumption.

World Food Safety Day is jointly facilitated by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO). Its objective is to spotlight and encourage measures to prevent, detect, and address foodborne risks, contributing to food security, human health, economic prosperity, agriculture, market access, tourism, and sustainable development.

Effectively managing food safety incidents demands concerted efforts from policymakers, food safety authorities, farmers, and food business operators, with the active involvement of consumers. More than 600 million people fall ill, and 420,000 die every year after eating contaminated food. These illnesses and these deaths are largely preventable if food safety is prioritised along the food chain, from the producer to the consumer.

PrAEctiCe contributes a tool to assist farmers in producing safe food.

The PrAEctiCe project aims to assist farmers in East Africa in transitioning to agroecological practices by creating a decision support tool. It is essential to transform agricultural and food systems to align with nature instead of working against it, as with the old “green-revolution” principles, which focus on substantially increasing crop production through artificial fertilisers, pesticides, and high-yield crop varieties. Instead, agroecology emphasises ecosystem-based approaches that can improve agricultural production, promote human well-being and address climate change.
