AFSA Tripartite event in Harare, Zimbabwe

The Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA), a PrAEctiCe partner, hosted a significant event in Harare, Zimbabwe from September 11-14, 2024.

The event addressed malnutrition, climate crises, and biodiversity loss. It included the 2nd African Agroecological Entrepreneurship and Territorial Markets Convening, the 5th Biennial Food Systems Conference, and the Zimbabwe Good Seed and Food Festival. Key stakeholders, including entrepreneurs, policymakers, and farmers, explored agroecological entrepreneurship, celebrated African food heritage, and promoted resilient food systems. The event emphasised youth, women, traditional foods, and farmer-managed seed systems while advocating for supportive policies.

Charles L. Tumuhe, Project Officer, HSHF/Agroecology at AFSA, presented PrAEctiCe during a talk he delivered. The event highlighted the urgent need to shift away from industrial agriculture, which has failed to provide sustainable food security in Africa. Instead, agroecology offers a robust, sustainable, and culturally rooted alternative.

AFSA Chair Hakim Baliraine emphasised the importance of transitioning to agroecological systems in Africa to achieve food sovereignty and climate resilience. He stressed the significance of honouring African roots, empowering the youth through agroecological entrepreneurship and celebrating rich food heritage, which can foster healthy diets, protect biodiversity, and ensure culturally appropriate solutions to the food systems crisis.
