“The lab adopts principles of agroecology and showcases the significance of biodiversity in ecological agriculture for enhancing resilience and sustainability”, Janet Maro, Director at the centre highlights in her presentation. The lab researches irrigation using fishpond water enriched with chicken manure, fishpond water with regular fish feed, and standard water. This practice has shown that nutrient-rich pond water significantly boosts crop yields, with differences between manure-enriched and feed-enriched water, depending on crop nitrogen needs. The lab also integrates floating solar panels, which generate electricity in off-grid areas while providing shade to improve fish well-being and optimize space utilization.
These activities were a great sight for the attendees who were also given a tour around the aqua-agriculture system in operation to observe the use of nutrient-rich fishpond water, enhanced with chicken manure and aeration techniques that maintain optimal fish health. They were also shown floating solar panels that generate electricity while providing shade for fish, optimising to use of space, and maize fields that benefit from sustainable irrigation practices.
The PrAEctiCe project anticipates hosting its third Open Day by June in Uganda.
